10/07/2010 - A New Business Model of Running an Apps Store with Low Entry Cost
Apps store has been dominating by most of the device suppliers like Apple’s iPhones/iTunes, Google’s Android Market, Nokia’s OVI store, Blackberry’s Handango. The revenue obtained from the market will be shared between the developers and the device suppliers. However, would the service supplier be able to operate an Apps Store with low capital investment cost and low maintenance cost, and also be able to share the revenue split with the developers.
CHL is now introducing a new business model concept to the customers, of which the business owners, like the service providers or the network operators, can directly operate an Apps Store with low-entry cost, and they are able to gain a market share and revenue split of this market.
MOBIstore, which is a new business model introduced by CHL and based on a leasing model for operation and maintenance. CHL will lease out the space of the MOBIstore to the business owners to run the operation. At the same time, developers from all over the worlds can join this circle and publish their applications to different Apps Store of different business owners all over the worlds. Business owners can maintain their own brands, promotional campaigns, and operation of the Apps Store and they can have their own authority to accept or reject any sort of applications that are uploaded by the developers based on their own company’s policies or local regulations. The MOBIstore also comes with different API that can be integrated seamlessly with any billing and provisioning platforms at the service providers’ or network operators’ sites.
Under this model, CHL and our partners will support our customers to run the Apps Store by recruiting the developers all over the worlds, maintaining the back-end operation and settlement systems, integrating our platform with the service providers’ or network operators’ billing or provisioning platforms, and we will also assist our customers to build up a store-front apps store with their own brand and flows, and customers or the business owners can make use of this application tool for any kind of marketing/advertising/brand building campaigns on top of acquiring new revenue streams from this new market. The MOBIstore is currently supported in Traditional Chinese and English languages with over 500 applications on the shelf now, and aimed to achieve over 1000 by the end of the year 2010. It is also a multi-platforms which would offer and support applications that are based on different mobile operating systems, like Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile.
By 2012, Android is tracking to become the world’s second largest mobile OS by market share this year, and to come with the market share of 29.6% for Android and 30.2% for Symbian by 2014, according to Gartner.
